Christo & Jeanne-Claude had the idea of the "Wrapped Trees" as early as the 1960s. Their projects for Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri and the Champs-Elysées, Paris, were not approved. It was not until 1997/1998 that they were able to realise this concept in the park of the Fondation Beyeler and the neighbouring Berower Park in Riehen, Basel.

On 13 November 1998 around 33 workers began to wrap 178 trees. A total of 55 000 square meters of fabric and 23 km of rope were used. On 22 November all the trees had been wrapped; on 14 December everything was dismantled and the material used was as always recycled. "The branches of the Wrapped Trees pushed the translucent fabric outward and created dynamic volumes of light and shadow and moving in the wind with new forms and surfaces shaped by the ropes on the fabric".
