LARGE TAPESTRY

Southern Netherlands, Oudenaarde, mid-18th century.
Depicting a wide tree-lined landscape with a river and a village, and a shepherd with his goats. In the center foreground a shepherd scene, and to the left a figural scene, probably Diana and Apollo, and a flute player sitting on a tree trunk. Lavish floral and foliate border. The outermost border replaced.
354 × 509 cm.

The Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels owns a comparable tapestry which, like the tapestry on offer, has large-leaved bushes in the foreground, including the striking and very similar thistle vine. This tapestry is attributed to the workshop of Albert Goeman (1680-1761). Cf. Guy Delmarcel & Ingrid de Meûtre: The Cinquantenaire tapestries. The collections of the Royal Museums of Art and History. Brussels 2023, no. 88, p. 338/339.
