HELBARD

Austro-Styrian, ca. 1580.
Long square tip, crescent-shaped blade. Blade and beaked hook with groups of punctiform piercings, mark: shield divided by a diagonal cross, the fields featuring shiny discs (Pangraz Taller). Long langets and band, ferrule. Square original shaft, grooved edges.
L 277 cm.

The helbards made by Pangraz Taller, burgher and armorer at Sulz near Steyr, are available in large numbers at the Armory in Graz. Cf. Pichler, Landeszeughaus in Graz, 1880, Plate XXVII, Ill. 5.
