EXECUTIONER'S SWORD

Germany, end of the 16th century.
Iron hilt, octagonal pommel, octagonal quillons. Leather-covered square wooden grip, the narrow end wrapped with fine iron wire. Double-edged blade (L 84.2 cm, W 5.3 cm), the center with short hollow cut. Gallows and wheel inlaid in brass in the Passau manner with the inscription "VIM VI REPELLERE LICET" with skull engraved later in the 19th century.
L 109.5 cm.

An executioner's sword in good condition, which was re-finished in the 19th century. Cf. H.R. Uhlemann: Die mittelalterlichen Gerichts- und späteren Richtschwerter von Passau, in: Blankwaffen, Ed. Stüber and Wetter, 1982, pp. 33-44.
