The star of the Watches auction on 23 June is a Rolex Daytona ‘Paul Newman’ wristwatch. The Rolex Cosmograph with its distinctive ‘exotic’ dial achieved legendary status after the actor Paul Newman began wearing reference 6239 following the filming of the movie ‘Winning’ in 1968, and during his subsequent motor-racing career. Since then, it has become one of the most coveted watches of all time – the true ‘grail’ for many collectors.
Produced between 1966 and 1969, reference 6241 was manufactured predominantly in stainless steel, making this 18K gold example particularly rare. Having been worn only a handful of times, it survives in exceptional, near-pristine condition, further enhancing its desirability. The future buyer will also receive the original warranty certificate from 1970, as well as the original Rolex box.
