At an auction of 19th-century paintings, a large group portrait by Otto Scholderer proved to be the star of the sale. The work, which depicts ladies preparing for a costume ball, attracted keen interest from museums and private collectors. Scholderer, a close friend of Édouard Manet, Henri Fantin-Latour and Hans Thoma, is considered an important link between Romanticism and Impressionism. With a final price of CHF 185 000, more than ten times its upper estimate, the painting will join the collection of a public institution.
