MADONNA OF THE CRESCENT MOON
Late Gothic style, Rhineland, probably ca. 1490(?).
Carved lime, hollowed and then partially closed on the back, polychrome painted and parcel-gilt. The standing Virgin Mary on a crescent moon with the infant Jesus in her left arm. The infant Jesus holds the apple of the world and raises his right hand in a gesture of blessing.
H 131 cm.
A report by art expert Wolfgang Eller from 2010 describes the figure as Ulm or Upper Swabia, ca. 1480.
