SEDES SAPIENTIAE WITH ENTHRONED MOTHER OF GOD AND CHRIST CHILD

Romanesque type, Spanish, probably 16th/17th century.
Soft wood carved in relief, polychrome painted, and with traces of gilding, hollowed out on verso. Enthroned Mother of God with the Christ Child on her lap, his right hand raised in a gesture of blessing and holding a gilt orb in his left hand. On a rectangular base.
H 84 cm.
Losses and cracks. Retouching and restorations.

Provenance:
- Probably from the Collection of Ernst and Marthe Kofler-Truniger (1903–1990 & 1918–1999), Lucerne, purchased from Noirjean, 21 June 1946 (according to a copy of an inventory card, Inv. No. K314).
- Swiss private collection.

Professor Julius Baum (1882–1959), former curator of the Württemberg State Museum, dates this sculpture to ca. 1200, as indicated by a copy of an inventory card for the figure. The inventory number K314 noted on the card refers to the Kofler-Truniger Collection, but this has not yet been verified.
