This cheerful gouache was created in 1942 during the Nazi occupation of France. Sonia and Robert Delaunay were in exile in Grasse. Materials were scarce and exhibitions were hardly possible. Nevertheless, Delaunay continued to paint: small, colorful and hopeful works like this one.
