Provenance:
The monogram and the style of painting point to the Viennese Hausmaler Carl Anreiter.
Comparative literature: Pazaurek 1924 (1971), p. 238, figs. 207–209; J. Hayward, "Signed Enamels by C.A. von Zirnfeld", in KFS no. 17, p. 11; R. Just, "Die Porzellanmaler Anreiter", in KFS no. 40, pp. 23 ff.; R. Just, "Nachtrag", KFS no. 41, p. 13, with a family tree of the Anreiter family.
According to the literature, the monogram has been attributed both to the father, Johann Karl Wendelin von Anreiter zu Zirnfeld (1702–1747), and to one of his sons. Rudolf Just identified the enamel boxes as works by Heinrich Johann Karl Anreiter, who returned from Doccia to Vienna with his father in 1747. The two enamel boxes published by Hayward correspond in their painting to the present box; particularly characteristic are the horses’ heads and black eyes, as Peter Ducret noted in his documentation.
