UKRAINE, 18TH CENTURY

Multi-register icon with the Resurrection of Christ and the Descent into Hades, the Passion of Christ and the principal feast days.
Oil-tempera mixed technique and gold ground on panel.
53 × 43.5 cm.

Provenance:
Swiss private collection.

The pictorial language of this panel reflects the mature formal vocabulary of the Ukrainian Baroque at the height of its development. The complex concentration of 26 scenes on a single icon demonstrates that as early as the 18th century Ukrainian workshops were capable of producing sophisticated pictorial programmes with refined, multi-figure miniatures.

Conditionreport:
Oil-tempera mixed technique on panel. Panel probably composed of three joined parts, slightly bowed. Two horizontal wooden reinforcements inserted into the upper and lower edges of the panel. Paint surface well preserved, with a fine network of craquelure. Slight colour abrasion and small paint losses and knocks visible in places. Several fine hairline cracks along the margins, as well as a join visible in the right half of the image.
Under UV light a few small areas of retouching visible, as well as areas of retouching along the join on the right. Varnish fluoresces unevenly greenish.
Overall in very good condition.
Without frame.
