A GREY SCHIST TRAY DECORATED WITH AN EROTIC SCENE. Gandhara, 2nd c. BC-2nd c. AD, d circa 12.5 cm. Metal stand. Minor repair.

Gandhara, 2. Jh.v.Chr. - 2. Jh.n.Chr. D ca. 12,5 cm.
Grauer Schiefer. Runde Palette mit innerer T-Unterteilung in Form eines schmalen Grates in eine Hälfte mit Reliefdekor und zwei konkave Kompartimente. Aussen weist der Rand eine Bordüre mit gravierten Lotosblättern auf. Das Relief zeigt eine neckische erotische Szene mit einem mittigen Liebespaar, das von einem zweiten Paar beobachtet wird, flankiert von Musikanten. Es handelt sich wohl um eine sogenannte "dionysische" Szene, die im buddhistischen Kontext Gandharas für das sinnliche Leben steht, das es zu überwinden gilt. Restaurierte Bruchstelle.
