AN EARLY WORK BY MAI TRUNG THU (1906–1980).

Ink and gouache on silk. The sewing box. Signed: Mai Thu, seal in Chinese Characters: Mai Thu. Framed. Slightly faded colours.


Provenance: Swiss private collection, purchased with Galerie Jean-François Apesteguy, Deauville around 2000 (invoice lost).

Mai Thu's daughter Mme Lan Mai has confirmed the authenticity of the work and will include it in her catalogue raisonné which she is currently preparing.
According to her the hand painted frame is not by the artist himself but has rather been commissioned by the gallery owner Apesteguy.
