LARGE PICTORIAL PANEL WITH SCENES FROM THE HISTORY OF ENGLAND

Historicism ca. 1860/80.
Architecturally structured wooden frame, applied with ivory carved in bas-relief. Opulently decorated with tendrils, mascarons, busts, and figures. The top, featuring the coat-of-arms of James IV, King of Scotland, flanked by two angels. The central panel, flanked by freestanding columns, depicts King Charles I of England, after a painting by Anthony van Dyck (Charles I at the Hunt, 1635), with a portrait of the young Mary Stuart on the throne, above. Below, a small depiction of Charles I's three eldest children, also after a painting by van Dyck (ca. 1636). On the left, a depiction of the Dissolution of the Long Parliament by Oliver Cromwell, after a painting by Benjamin West (ca. 1782). Above, an oval portrait of James, son of Mary Stuart and Henry Stuart, later James XI, King of Scotland and James I, King of England and Ireland. Below, a cavalry battle from the Civil War of England, probably after a painting by Ernest Crofts. On the right, the landing of King Charles II on the coast at Dover in 1660, after a painting by Benjamin West (ca. 1782). Above, probably an oval portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh. Below, a naval battle, probably at Barfleur and La Hougue (1692) or at Terheide (1657).
100 × 128 cm.
