Workshop of GUSTAVE COURBET

Le Puits Noir. Oil on canvas. Signed lower left: G. Courbet. 66 x 82.5 cm. Expertise: Jean- Jacques Fernier, Musée Gustave Courbet Ornans, Paris, 22.02.2000. Jean-Jacques Fernier of the Musée Gustave Courbet Ornans suggests that this painting is a work from the series of "Puits Noir" which Courbet executed with his assistants in Ornans, the town of his birth. The date can be assumed to be in the first half of the 1870s, which is the period between Courbet's release from Sainte-Pélagie prison and his Swiss exile. Courbet's assistant for this painting probably came from the circle of Alexandre Rapin (1839-1889).
