EDITORIAL

DEAR READERS

Our September auctions once again turn the spotlight on Old Masters and the decorative arts. A particular highlight is the sale of Dr Peter Ducret’s important collection of faience, comprising more than 250 objects. The Old Master Paintings auction also features two superbly preserved and signed paintings by Jan and Pieter Brueghel. On the following pages, we introduce some of the highlights of the upcoming auctions and look back at an exceptionally successful first half of 2026. We are also accepting consignments for our December auctions until the end of September.

A FASCINATION
WITH FAÏENCE

For Dr Peter Ducret, collecting was much more than a passion. His early fascination with natural curiosities and faience grew over the decades into an exceptional collection of 18th-century ceramics. Among its highlights are imaginative trompe-l’œil faience pieces that imitate vegetables, animals and other subjects with astonishing realism. Rare examples, including works from the celebrated Strasbourg workshop of the Hannong dynasty, reveal his discerning eye for quality, rarity and art-historical importance.

TWO WORKS
BY TWO BROTHERS

Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Jan Brueghel the Elder were leading members of one of the most celebrated dynasties in Flemish painting. While Pieter carried on his father’s artistic legacy, Jan developed a distinctive style of his own, remarkable for its wealth of detail. Two works in our auction offer a glimpse into the art of these two brothers – and the extraordinary skill of Antwerp painters in the early 17th century.

18TH-CENTURY TREASURES

From an ingenious singing-bird automaton to a magnificent portrait by François Boucher, our September auctions bring together exceptional works from the age of Rococo and the Enlightenment.
↘

REDISCOVERIES

Two Florentine panels take us back to the painting of the 14th and 15th centuries: a rediscovered Annunciation from the artistic circle of Pesellino and Fra Filippo Lippi, and a depiction of Saint Elizabeth attributable to Agnolo Gaddi.

Silver Tankards in Koller's September 2026 auction

DRINKING
IN STYLE

Our Silver auction on 17 September features a fascinating group of covered tankards. During the Renaissance and Baroque periods, precious drinking vessels were far more than practical objects: they displayed the wealth and social standing of their owners.
↘

WATER AND ICE IN
THE NORTHERN LIGHT

Three paintings in our September auction reveal how differently the Dutch masters of the Golden Age approached light, composition and the human figure. From the silvery light of a frozen waterscape and the tranquil expanse of a river to the drama of the open sea, they offer three captivating visions of the northern landscape.

VISIONS
OF NATURE

From the monumental mountains of the Lauterbrunnen Valley to a wintry landscape of ice, Hans Thoma and Andreas Schelfhout responded to nature in very different ways. Two exceptional paintings show how each artist transformed landscape, light and atmosphere into a pictorial world entirely his own.

NEW FACES
FOR OLD MASTERS

With Laura Koller and Flavio De Corso, a new generation is carrying forward Koller’s more than 60-year tradition in drawings and prints. The September auctions span the centuries, from François Boucher and Parmigianino to Albert Anker and an important group of works from the estate of Johann Nepomuk Bürkel.

BORN
FREE

It is difficult to overstate the importance of this extraordinarily rare first printing. The modest volume contains ideas that shook the political and social order of the Ancien Régime and would ultimately have an impact far beyond the borders of France.

LOOKING BACK AT
THE SUMMER AUCTIONS

Koller’s June auctions produced outstanding results: seven lots passed the million-franc mark, more than 50 others achieved hammer prices between CHF 100 000 and CHF 1 million, and 85% of all lots found buyers. The excitement in the saleroom was palpable throughout the week – for some lots, more than thirty bidders competed on the telephones, in the room and online. The Watches auction also saw two new world records, including the gold Rolex Daytona ‘Paul Newman’, which sold for CHF 2.4 million.
