REVEALED ANEW
PREVIEW OF THE OLD MASTER PAINTINGS AUCTION ON 18 SEPTEMBER 2026
This Florentine Renaissance panel depicting the Annunciation has a remarkable history of rediscovery and reassessment. Extensive overpainting in the 19th century altered its original appearance so dramatically that for a time, the work was even considered a forgery from that period. A comprehensive restoration later revealed the original paint layer, including the kneeling donor, the sky and the painting’s refined execution. Technical analysis carried out by the Doerner Institut in Munich confirmed the work’s authenticity in 2011. The style of this oil and tempera painting on panel is particularly close to the work of Francesco Pesellino and the circle of Fra Filippo Lippi.

GADDI
Saint Elizabeth with roses
Tempera and gold ground on panel, 23 × 21 cm
Estimate: CHF 40 000/60 000
The small panel depicting Saint Elizabeth of Thüringen was in all likelihood once part of a now-lost altarpiece by Agnolo Gaddi. Together with panels depicting Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Margaret of Antioch, it originally formed an ensemble which was probably created for a Franciscan church, possibly one belonging to the Poor Clares. Stylistic and technical similarities, together with the high quality of its execution, point to a date in the early 1390s and support the attribution to one of the leading painters of the Florentine Late Gothic.
