Porträt des Kardinals Antonio Facchinetti (1575-1606).

Gutachten: Raffaella Morselli, Januar 2015. Provenienz: - Sammlung Marchese Alessandro Facchinetti, 1685. - Sammlung Phamphili (?). - Sammlung Sciarra Colonna, Rom. - Europäische Privatsammlung. Literatur: - Petrucci, F.: Pittura di Ritratto a Rom. Il Seicento, Rom 2008, Band III, Nr. 108, S. 525 (als Giuseppe Cesare, genannt Cavaliere d'Arpino). - Morselli, Raffaella: Guido Reni from Bologna to Rome and back, in: Caravaggio's Rome 1600-1630, Mailand 2012, S. 286-287, Abb. 2-3. RENI, GUIDO (Calvenzano 1575 - 1642 Bologna) Portrait of Cardinal Antonio Facchinetti (1575-1606). Oil on canvas. 67.3 x 52.5 cm. Certificate: Raffaella Morselli, January 2015. Provenance: - Collection of Marchese Alessandro Facchinetti, 1685. - Phamphili collection (?). - Sciarra Colonna collection, Rome. - European private collection. Literature: Petrucci, F.: Pittura di Ritratto a Rom. Il Seicento, Rome 2008, Vol. III, No. 108, p. 525 (as Giuseppe Cesare, called Cavaliere d'Arpino). Morselli, Raffaella: Guido Reni from Bologna to Rome and Back, in: Caravaggio's Rome 1600-1630, Milan 2012, pp. 286-287, Figs. 2-3. "Saggio, pio, devoto, moderato, prudente," (wise, devout, humble, moderate, prudent): with these words Valerio Zani, head of the Accademia dei Gelati in Bologna, described Cardinal Antonio Facchinetti, pictured here, in his memoir of academy members, published in 1672 (Zani, Valerio: Memorie, impresse e ritratti de 'Signori Accademici gelati di Bologna nel raccoltate principato del Signor Conte Valerio Zani, il ritardato, Bologna 1672, pp. 8-12). The figure pictured in the engraving on the frontispiece by Lorenzo Tinti (1626 Bologna 1672), which refers back to our painting (see Fig. 1), confirms the identity of the sitter, while providing further evidence that the painting was still at the Palazzo Facchinetti in Bologna prior to 1672, where Tinti used it as a model. In the same collection is also found the portrait of Pope Innocent IX (1519-1591), the namesake of Giovanni Antonio Facchinetti (1575-1606) and uncle of our subject, who appointed him cardinal under the auspices of the consistory of December 18, 1591. It has further been confirmed (see Morselli, R .: Collezionisti e nella quadrerie Bologna del Seicento, Los Angeles / Monaco 1998, pp. 221-227) that in 1685 our painting passed from the collection of Marchese Alessandro Facchinetti into the possession of his niece Violante (1649-1716), who had married the Prince Giambattista Pamphili (? -1717), some years earlier, in 1671. Their daughter Olimpia (1672-1731) then married Filippo Colonna, Prince of Paliano (1663-1714), and so the painting came by inheritance into the Colonna collection in Rome. Antonio Facchinetti, who was born in the same year as Guido Reni and was appointed cardinal by the age of 16, remained very close to Reni throughout his short life (he died at the age of 31 years). He was the one who gave Reni in 1600 the commission to copy the "Ecstasy of Saint Cecilia" by Raphael in the church of San Giovanni in Monte, Bologna (see Malvasia, C.C.: Felisina Pittrice, ed. 1841 Bologna, Vol. I, p. 553; Vol. II, p. 12; and Pepper, D.S.: Guido Reni L'opera completa, 1988, pp. 216-217, no. 11) and who recommended the artist to Cardinal Paolo Emilio Sfondrati (1560-1618) for various commissions during the period 1601-1604 (see Malvasia 1841, Vol. I, p. 553; Vol. II, pp. 12-13). In her report, Raffaella Morselli accordingly dates our painting to the period of 1600-1605 and compares it stylistically with early portraits by Reni, which are documented in his inventory book; for example, a portrait of Cardinal Giacomo Sannesio (1609, Canesso collection, Paris). The luminous red colour in the vestment of our cardinal is also found in several paintings by Reni dating from 1600 onwards, as in the mantle of St. Peter in the Pinacoteca di Brera, in the robe of St. Catherine of Alexandria in the Museo Diocesano in Albenga, and in David's hat at the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
