Although Renoir primarily defined himself as a figure painter, landscape and nature also played an important, central role from the beginning of his artistic career. The present work belongs to Renoir‘s later oeuvre and shows characteristics to this effect. Around 1902 the Renoir family moved to Cagnes in order to make Renoir’s serious illness more bearable in the mild temperatures of the south of France. The artist had already been fascinated by the landscape there and executed various paintings amidst its splendour. The present work shows one of Renoir’s favourite views. Massive trees frame the view of the vast, blue sea. To the right, two ladies sit hidden under a tree, themselves enjoying the idyllic surroundings. The painting is infused with a sweetness and radiates a sense of inner peace and serenity through its harmonious composition and soft palette, which express Renoir‘s positive disposition despite his developing illness.
