HELBARD

Swiss, end of the 17th century, Officer, Berne, Vaud, Bernese Aargau.
Blade-shaped tip, diamond section, wavy edges. Half-moon-shaped, pierced blade with symmetric band decoration. Square parrying spikes. Two langets and shaft bands. Original octagonal shaft.
L 223 cm.

Rare, exquisitely crafted weapon in very good condition. In 1687, the Bernese armoury owned 235 "Officer helbards". The helbard on offer, commissioned by an Officer, differs from the simple ordinary version in the open-work. Local armoury work. Cf. Wegeli, Stangenwaffen, bernisches Historisches Museum 1939, p. 95, Nos. 1542-1543.
