This meteorite was found by a nomad in the summer of 2021 near Hassi L’Hajar, which is approximately 90 km from Ouargla, Algeria. It consists of 56 pieces, weighing a total amount of 4016 grams. The rocks were probably exposed at the surface for thousands if not tens of thousands of years, before they were found.
The stones have a dark brown and shiny, sand-blasted surface. The cut surface of the type specimen reveals a melt breccia with numerous tiny clasts, embedded within a dark glassy matrix. Breccia is a stone comprised of smaller stones and mineral fragments that were consolidated by a base mass (‘glued together’). The many different metals found in the breccia of this meteorite can clearly be attributed to the surface of the moon.
A fascinating specimen, formed from a multitude of lunar rocks and then, after its long journey through time and space, slowly polished by the sands and winds of the Sahara Desert.
