CRINOIDEA FOSSIL

Seirocrinus subangularis
Early Jurassic, 201–174 million years
Holzmaden, Germany
120 × 60 cm

Seirocrinus subangularis is a fossil crinoid species from the Early Jurassic. These flower-like animals are distant relatives of sea urchins and starfish. They consisted of a stem about 60 to 90 centimetres long, and a crown that reached the length of 20 to 30 centimetres. With the long arms of its finely branched crown, the crinoids filtered edible particles from the moving water, on which they fed.

Fossil crinoids are found all over the world, but the most beautiful specimens come from the famous fossil site Holzmaden in southern Germany.

Crinoids lived in huge colonies that swayed back and forth in the ocean depths. The motion of this mysterious-looking creature, frozen in time, is of minimalist elegance. Just by looking at it long enough, one can imagine it continuing its graceful floating movement, just as it did millions of years ago.

The specimen presented here is of the finest quality and of exceptional size. The two crinoids are entangled beautifully and at their ends, they are connected to a small piece of driftwood.
