As we begin the new year with our first major auction series, we are once again delighted to present an exceptionally distinguished selection of Old Master paintings together with works ranging from Antiquity to the modern era. In addition to the highlights featured in the following pages, numerous further works will be offered in our three-day live auctions, followed by our ‘ibid online only’ sales. TWO ARTISTS,
TWO SIGNATURES

Salomon van Ruysdael and Jan van Goyen, two of the most important Dutch landscape painters of the 17th century, meet in our Old Masters auction. Their motifs are similar, yet their artistic signatures differ in subtle ways. Their treatment of colour is markedly distinct. Van Goyen, with his tonal painting, emphasises the expressive character of the river landscape, while Ruysdael works in richer and more sensuous colour. Van Goyen depicts the everyday; Ruysdael idealises the landscape. ↘

AN IDEAL
OF BEAUTY

The distinctive gentle S-curve derives from the Aphrodite of Knidos, created around 350 BCE. Its sculptor, Praxiteles, depicted the goddess completely nude for the first time, marking a milestone in ancient art. ↘

ARTISTIC CRAFTSMANSHIP
FROM ANCIENT EGYPT

Between 500 and 200 BCE, the deceased were covered with decorative cartonnage elements: masks, collars, breast and leg plates, as well as foot coverings. Elaborate examples such as the present one were additionally gilded and adorned with stones. ↘

BRUEGHEL’S VIEW
OF DAILY LIFE

The symbolically charged composition is combined with a vivid depiction of rural daily life. The subtly humorous marginal episodes underline the artist’s narrative richness and keen observation of life. ↘

STAGING WORLDS
OF IMAGERY

A previously unknown painting by François Boucher from a long-standing family collection represents an important rediscovery for 18th-century French art. It depicts ‘The Marriage of Ariadne and Bacchus’, a popular theme from classical mythology. ↘

ON THE VALUE
OF WORDS

The letters and documents in our catalogue repeatedly demonstrate how dependent talent is upon financial support – whether to survive or to flourish. ↘

ORNAMENT AND SYMBOL

The heraldic figures on this cabinet derive from the Nuremberg artist Virgil Solis. Depicted on the cabinet are Julius Caesar, Godfrey of Bouillon, Alexander the Great, Charlemagne, King David, King Arthur and Joshua. ↘
