Literature:
The fashionable seaside resort of Trouville on the northern French coast served Eugène Boudin as a retreat from the early 1860s onwards, which the painter visited every summer and captured in numerous paintings. The harbour in particular, with its sailing boats and changing light conditions, offered Boudin an ideal motif for his plein-air painting.
In this charming work, painted by Boudin in 1894 at the height of his artistic career, the artist captures particularly well the maritime atmosphere of the harbour basin with boats at low tide and the cloudy blue sky of Normandy.
