TER BORCH, GERARD
Zwolle 1617–1681 Deventer
Born in Zwolle, the artist Gerad Terborch, also known as ter Borch, is known for his genre scenes and portraits. Between 1633 and 1635 he was apprenticed to the Haarlem landscape painter Pieter de Molijn (1595–1661). During this time he added figures to his master's landscapes. After his apprenticeship with Molijn, Ter Borch travelled through Europe and visited England, France, Spain and Italy. In 1640 he spent time in Rome, but returned to the Netherlands in the same year. A few years later, around 1645, he settled in Amsterdam, where he concentrated mainly on painting genre pictures. Gradually his compositions became calmer and more sober, with fewer figures. He married in Deventer on 14 February 1654, and there he finally settled and produced his best-known paintings. From the 1660s he concentrated more on portraiture. His characteristic painting style was to influence a whole generation of artists, such as Gabriel Metsu (1629–1667), Pieter de Hooch (1629–1684) and Jan Vermeer (1632–1675).
