Marie-Anne Fragonard, née Gérard, was a painter of miniatures and the wife of the artist Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806). Her younger sister, Marguerite Gérard (1761–1873), was a pupil of Marie-Anne's husband and one of a few eighteenth-century women artists who gained recognition and financial independence thanks to her art. Until recently, miniature portraits by Marie-Anne Fragonard were attributed to her famous husband. In the 1990s, art historian and the former Director of the Louvre Pierre Rosenberg suggested reattributing several of the Fragonard miniature portraits in the Louvre collection to Jean-Honoré s wife, which led to the recognition of Marie-Anne Fragonard as an independent artist. Most of her works were portraits of children. The girl depicted in the portrait on offer is most likely her daughter, Rosalie Fragonard (1769–1788), who died at the age of 19 and was also one of the favorite models of her father. Comparable portraits are held in the Musée Cognacq-Jay, le goût du XVIIIe (Portrait présumé de Rosalie Fragonard, Inventory No. J 728) and in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm (Young girl, Inventory No. NMB 913). The light and dynamic brushwork of Marie-Anne Fragonard’s portraits reveals both her masterhood as a painter and the influence of her husband’s style on her work.
