In his 1996 publication, Traversari compares the hairstyles of the two empresses Sallustia Orbana and Giulia Mamea during the Severan period. It can be assumed that the head on offer is an unfinished portrait of the wife of Emperor Alexander Severus. Interestingly, the head on offer is illustrated without the replaced nose in Traversari's article. Traversari mentions the famous English architect Philip Speakman Webb, an important representative of the Arts & Crafts movement, as the provenance.
