A PAIR OF ALTAR ANGELS

Late 17th/early 18th century. Circle of David III Zürn (1665-1724).
Lime carved full round and with traces of painting. Female and male angel in an elegant, moving pose, with beautifully draped robes. Paint removed.
H 104 cm and 101 cm.

According to oral tradition, these altar angels originate from the workshop of David III Zürn, who is said to have made them for the parish church in the Moravian town of Römerstadt. The figures were purchased in the 1930s as part of a renovation of the church furnishings in Römerstadt. According to a local history book of the parish (only small excerpts available), David Zürn was commissioned to sculpt the altar there. The sources speak of a dispute between Zürn and the carpenter Johann Ehrlich over the delivery of an altar model (court book from 1720).
