Strictly speaking, this work by Claudia Comte is a relic from the exhibition ‘When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth’, which was shown at the König Galerie in Berlin in 2018. At the centre of the installation were twenty spruce trunks hanging from the ceiling, creating a sacred presence in the room. A niche had been carved into each of these trunks, also reminiscent of the shape of a reliquary. Comte placed various objects made from different materials in each of them.
In this case, a finely polished marble box - an everyday object that immediately takes on the character of a religious icon thanks to the fine choice of materials and meticulous craftsmanship. The raw power of nature meets stunning precision craftsmanship, raising questions about the relationship between man, nature and culture and their transience. Comte's interest in exploring materiality, time and the interface between nature and technology is once again in evidence.
