JOHANN PETRUS VON ESCH (1666–1731), ATTRIBUTED TO
Central Switzerland, late 17th/early 18th century.
Reverse glass painting depicting the Adoration of the Golden Calf. In a gilt wooden frame. Verso with a label indicating the purchase from a gallery on 22.VIII.1942.
41.5 × 58 cm.
Provenance:
Minor losses in the reverse glass painting. Losses to the gilding of the frame.
After the engraving by Elias Baeck, also called Heldenmuth (1679–1747), “The Children of Israel Worshipping the Golden Calf”. Another version of this work is part of the Gartner Collection in the Schlossmuseum Murnau and is also attributed to Johann Petrus von Esch (illustrated in: Wolfgang Steiner: Eine andere Art von Malerey. Hinterglasgemälde und ihre Vorlagen 1550–1850, Berlin-Munich 2012, p. 220). Repeating the same subjects allowed a faster way of working, with the focus being placed more on the application of color than on the composition (Georg Staffelbach: Geschichte der Luzerner Hinterglasmalerei von den Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart. Lucerne 1951, p. 55).
