ENAMELLED INCENSE BOAT, SO-CALLED “NAVETTE À ENCENS”
Limoges, 13th century.
Copper engraved and with remnants of gilding, as well as champlevé enamel decorated with tendrils on a turquoise ground. Two applied, parcel-gilt copper medallions of saints (probably Evangelists) also enamelled in blue and red. Purple gemstone cabochons set in gilt copper. Oval, boat-shaped vessel, the cover rounded at the ends and ending in bird heads, and hinged down one side. The walls engraved with geometric friezes. On a short trumpet-shaped foot (probably replaced).
19 × 9 × 7 cm.
Gilding heavily rubbed, enamel with losses. One lid end severely bent. Applied decoration, a later addition. 1 cabochon with a crack.
DiThese incense boats were part of the liturgical furnishings of churches and were used to store incense. A comparable example is in the Collection of the "Fondation Gandur pour l'Art" in Geneva (Inv. No. FGA-AD-Obj-0085), which formerly came from the Ruiz Collection in Madrid and was later sold at Koller with the Brummer Collection in 1979 (Galerie Koller, Zurich, 17 October 1979, Lot No. 234). The boat shown there is decorated with tendrils like the one on offer, and the pointed lid ends are shaped like snake heads. The lids of the example from the Gandur Collection have two pierced dome-shaped attachments. The two Evangelists in the lot on offer cover two perforations. It can be assumed that the boat on offer was originally decorated with a comparable motif.
Another incense boat comprising a very similar decoration, except for the later added decorations, was part of the Keir Collection, which was auctioned by Sotheby's in New York in 1997 (Sotheby's New York. The Keir Collection of Medieval Works of Art. 20 November 1997. Lot No. 89).
