CARVED AND PAINTED CONSOLE

Rococo, Venice, ca. 1730/40.
Wood, opulently carved, and painted light blue and gold. Slightly trapezoidal, curved leaf with shaped edge and dark green faux marble on a straight frame with a canopy frieze and an open-worked stand with four distinctively double-curved legs with scroll feet. The upper part of the legs is carved with a woman's face. The multiple-curved X-shaped stretcher is decorated with a shell in the middle.
135 × 65 × 89 cm.

The leaf with cracks and losses to the faux marble. Losses to the polychrome paintwork.

Cf. for a console with a similar design and a similar choice of carved elements, such as the heads at the corners, the X-shaped stretcher with a shell, and the canopy frieze below the frame: auction Sotheby's Florence, 5-28-1990, lot 665. There, the console is described as probably from Emilia-Romagna.
