MIRROR

Louis XV, Germany, probably Potsdam, 18th century.
Oak carved with rocailles, flowers, grapes and leaves, and silvered. Curved, rectangular and profiled frame with a striking eagle finial in a cartouche.
Mirror 115 × 52 cm.

This mirror is reminiscent of works by August Nahl (1710-1781) or Johann Michael Hoppenhaupt (1685-1751), who worked in Potsdam. The element of the feathered wing is striking and can be found, for example, in the ornamentation of the organ prospect in Berne Minster, which was created by August Nahl with the collaboration of Johann Friedrich Funk (see Hermann von Fischer: Fonck à Berne. Berne 2001, fig. 398, p. 220).
