At the height of his artistic production during the interwar period, within the context of the New Objectivity, the works of Karl Hofer are marked by a striking sobriety, characterized by isolated figures, quiet atmospheres, and a subtle psychological depth. A typical example of this is the painting "Mädchen und Katze" (Girl and Cat).
The scene appears calm and composed, almost timeless, while at the same time imbued with a quiet inner presence. The luminous yellow of the dress provides a warm, vibrant accent. The posture of the cat reveals a subtle tension, while the girl’s gesture conveys a hidden, restrained intimacy that gradually and gently unfolds to the viewer.
