The design for this bronze figure is based on a large marble sculpture by Giambologna, which he created for the Bargello around 1570. An early bronze version is known to have existed before 1611, as recorded in the Zeh Collection in Augsburg. The figure was later reproduced frequently. An example from the 17th century can be found in the Cleveland Museum (cf. William D. Wixom: Renaissance Bronzes from Ohio Collections. The Cleveland Museum of Art. Cleveland 1975, No. 150).
