In HR Giger's Landschaft II, the earth itself seems to become an organism. Pink and purple shapes billow across the surface, reminiscent of skin, tissue or topographical structures. A world opens up that is both delicate and disturbing in equal measure. A silent, almost breathing structure that makes the vulnerability of the living tangible. The work Teuflischer Diskurs (lot 3502), a darkly mechanical scenario in which Giger brings together the motifs for which he is primarily known, the fusion of body and machine, of eroticism and menace, condensed into an oppressive intensity, is completely different. The image is a visual echo of his nightmares, but also an expression of his fascination for the boundless, the hybrid, the uncanny. The state of tension which unfolds between these two poles is where Giger's work comes to life. The organic meets the technological, the delicate meets the horrific. The works Landschaft II and Teuflischer Diskurs are like the two voices of an inner dialogue, poetic and harrowing at the same time. They show that Giger's art is more than pure fantasy. It is soliloquy, vision and confession and a testament to the remarkable diversity of his work.
