In the present charcoal drawing, Henri Matisse once again explores the theme of the female nude, a subject to which he devoted himself intensively over several decades and across a variety of media.
The standing figure, filling the sheet in its full height with arms raised, adopts a pose that appears open, self-assured, and powerful. Her posture conveys a sense of natural ease, yet also a tension that seems to make the body vibrate. The head is only suggested as a circular form, directing the viewer’s attention entirely toward the lines, volumes, and impulses of movement within the body.
The execution is characterized by spontaneous, sketch-like, and fluid strokes that lend the depiction an immediate vitality. Matisse’s working process is particularly evident in the right arm: multiple repeated lines overlap, as if the arm were slightly moving in the very moment of drawing. This gestural repetition charges the figure with energy and conveys the impression of a state between stillness and motion.
The torso, hips, and legs are modeled with soft shading, blended using a stump (estompe). This creates gentle transitions between the emphasized curves and recesses of the body, which acquires an almost sculptural presence. The figure appears as if suffused with light, and although its contours emerge clearly, it retains a sense of lightness.
