Literature:
Jan van Os is one of the most important representatives of 18th-century Dutch still-life painting. Born in Middelharnis, the artist worked in The Hague throughout his career and created some of the finest flower still lifes of his time. His works are distinguished by colourful, abundant and vividly composed bouquets set against a light background.
The signed painting offered here impressively demonstrates the exceptional fine painting for which Van Os was famous. Even the smallest details are rendered with the greatest care, such as the drops of water on the leaves, the delicate texture of the petals and the downy texture of the bird's nest in the foreground.
We thank Dr Fred G. Meijer for confirming the authenticity of this painting.
This painting is documented in the RKD, The Hague.
