SHROUD FRAGMENT - FORMER COLLECTION OF HAN CORAY AND DORRIE STOOP

Egyptian, Roman period, ca. 1st/2nd century AD.
Polychrome painting on linen fabric, mounted on later paper. Depiction of a richly ornamented female figure, probably the Sky Goddess Nut or Hathor. Barthe 35, Boulevard de Strasbourg Paris.
Dimensions 62.7 × 44.5 cm.
Restored. Fabric additions. Retouching. Losses, cracks in the paintwork. Trimmed.

Provenance:
- The Collection of Spouses Han Coray (Karl Heinrich Ulrich Anton Coray, 1880–1974) and Dorrie Stoop (Theodora Stoop, 1895–1928), ca. 1920–1928, Erlenbach, Zurich (according to an undated black-and-white photograph stamped “Coray-Stoop, Erlenbach/Zurich”).
- After the death of Dorrie Stoop, privately owned by Han Coray (1880–1974), from 1930 in Agnuzzo in the Casa Coray, Ticino (depicted in an undated black-and-white photograph).
- By inheritance, in the current Swiss private collection.

Cf. a very similar shroud, in which the female deity is depicted almost down to her knees, in the British Museum (Inv. No. EA68950). Another comparable shroud from the Roman period is in the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden (known as the Sensaos shroud, Inv. No. AMM 8-d). Based primarily on a comparison with a shroud from the Museo Civico Archeologico di Bologna, it can be assumed that the figure depicted is the Goddess Hathor (cf. Journal of Cultural Heritage: Unraveling the mummy's shroud: A multi-analytical study of a rare painted textile from Roman Egypt, Vol. 68, July/August 2024, pp. 107–121). As with the exhibit from Bologna, the goddess's face is framed by long, black hair that ends in thick curls and is held together by a white, geometrically decorated headband. Her pink complexion is enlivened by round, reddish-brown cheeks. The facial features are accentuated in the same reddish-brown tone, while the eyebrows, eye contours, and round pupils are rendered on a white background and outlined in black. Her ears, neck, and arms are adorned with jewelry, characterized primarily by the alternating play of red and blue beads.
