The extensive oeuvre of cabinetmaker Léonard Boudin is very heterogeneous in terms of both style and design. It includes lacquered and inlaid furniture in the Louis XV, Transition, and Louis XVI styles. This is mainly due to the fact that, from 1772 onwards, Boudin also worked as a furniture dealer, or “marchand mercier,” selling pieces by fellow cabinetmakers, which he often signed with his own signature alongside that of the piece's creator. His repertoire includes a striking number of pieces with floral marquetry, for which the cabinetmaker was known for his particularly fine design. While the floral marquetry of the pair of chests of drawers offered here strongly points to the cabinetmaker, the rest of the design of the reserves and fillets “à la grecque” is comparatively simple for his products.
