AN OPULENTLY CRAFTED CHESS SET

Probably Austria-Hungary, ca. 1900. The lid and the chess pieces are marked IBB and 925.
Silver, in part gilt and chiseled, polychrome enamel-, pearl-, and amethyst inlays, and red velvet. Large square chess box with slanted, opulently decorated sides and a hinged top plate on curved, openwork feet. The chessboard is enameled in black and white. The sides are inlaid with amethysts and surrounded by enameled coats of arms and weapons, sculpted horsemen, canopy niches with knights, and pearl-studded columns. Half-bodies of horses protrude from the four corners. The upper edge features a curved gallery.
The interior is lined with red velvet and decorated with small rosettes and chains for attaching the chess pieces. The chess box contains 32 pieces made of silver, some of which are gilt. The King and the Queen are each seated on a throne under canopies set with amethysts and quartz. The rooks, knights, bishops, and pawns are medieval in design, with enameled shields, lances, and swords. All the figures stand on beaded, openwork bases with red velvet feet.
Chess box: 58 × 58 × 15 cm. H king 12 cm, H pawn 8 cm.
Slightly oxidized and rubbed. Scratches and cracks on the gemstones and the enamel. Minor repairs to the chess pieces.
