Nissen ZBI 3660 - Faber du Faur 1855 - Lanckoronska/Oe. I, 32 - Vgl. ausführlich Kat. "Natura Sacra" (Zürich 2012), S. 77-128. - First latin edition. - The ‘Physica Sacra’ was published in German as early as 1728. With this work, Scheuchzer undertook what the NDB describes as ‘a unique attempt at a scientific exegesis of the Holy Scriptures’. It was published in German, Latin, French and Dutch, with the first two editions featuring identical copperplate engravings (the captions were therefore printed in Latin and German). Scheuchzer himself completed the German and Latin manuscripts, but did not live to see the complete edition in print. The impressive copperplate engravings, produced by Augsburg masters after J. M. Füssli, depict biblical scenes with figurative frames and details, usually followed and supplemented by further engravings featuring detailed depictions of animals, plants, architecture and technical subjects. There are also engravings depicting domestic and agricultural life, astronomy, as well as battle formations, family trees, maps and landscapes, alongside portraits of the author and publisher. - Very few pages have tiny spots, which, however, never extend into the illustrations or the text. The title pages bear consecutive, small, stamped numbers (127–130) from an old inventory; Volume 1 has an old inventory number on the verso of the first flyleaf. – A complete, wide-margined, exceptionally well-preserved and very decoratively bound copy of this magnificent work.
