AN EXTREMELY RARE RANK BADGE DEPICTING A 'LONGMA' (DRAGON-HORSE)
China, 19th c., 30 × 30 cm.
Kesi silk tapestry. A square badge, likely for a member of the Imperial Clan or Imperial Guard. Finely woven depicting the mythical dragon-horse with a scaled body above a lishui, clouds, and Buddhist symbols. Minor fraying.
A comparable example is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Acc. No. 30.75.1025). In the 19th century, the Longma was not part of the standard nine-rank military or civil system. Instead, it was an Imperial Clan badge, often associated with the Empress's kinsmen or specific Imperial Guards.
