STANDING HERCULES WITH THE PELT OF THE NEMEAN LION

Germany, early 18th century. Based on a model by Ignaz Elhafen (1658–1715) for the Elector Johann Wilhelm of the Palatinate.
Ivory, carved in the round and partly openworked. Hercules is depicted in a striding pose on an oval base, his head slightly inclined downward to the left. His right arm is behind his back, holding the lion's pelt, while his left arm supports a club resting on his shoulder. Mounted on a later blue stone- and white marble base.
H 17 cm, with base 23 cm.
Club repaired in the lower section. Few cracks and discolorations.

Provenance:
The Arlette and Antony Emden Collection, France.

The model for the sculpture on offer dates back to Ignaz Elhafen's striding Hercules from ca. 1710, which is kept in the Bavarian National Museum in Munich (Inv. No. R4722). According to Christian Theuerkauff, the model for this statuette is unknown: Der “Helffenbeinarbeiter” Ignaz Elhafen, in: Wiener Jahrbuch für Kunstgeschichte, 21, 1968, pp. 92–157, pp. 141 f., fig. plate 123, Cat. No. 100. Here, the figure of Meleager with the slain Calydonian boar (also in the Bavarian National Museum in Munich, Inv. No. R4724) is presented as the counterpart to the sculpture of Hercules as the “Slayer” of the Nemean lion. Both personify heroic figures who conquer wildness and chaos.

The object on offer, which contains protected materials, is located at the Koller Representative Office in Munich (viewing only in Munich by appointment). An EU trade permit is available; export outside the EU is not possible.

Conditionreport:
- Repair to the lower section of the club (slightly offset).
- Cleaned, with minor discolorations and small cracks.
- Glued to a later stone base with traces of adhesive.
