Theobald Michau received his artistic training at a young age in the Brussels studio of the landscape painter Lucas Achtschellinck (1626–1699) and is among the last artists in a painting tradition initiated by Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568–1625) and his son Jan Brueghel the Younger (1610–1678) at the beginning of the 17th century, characterised by richly detailed landscapes with colour perspective in blue and green tones. Theobald Michau belongs to this tradition of landscape painting, while his paintings are distinguished by an individual characteristic style with softer forms and poetic treatment. The river landscape depicted here is painted with Michau's typical attention to detail and brilliant colouring. With the lighter and more colourful palette of the 18th century, he further developed the tradition of his predecessors. His works were also frequently confused with those of Jan Brueghel, a difficulty compounded by the fact that only a few of his paintings, unlike the work offered here, are signed.
