Provenance:
Konrad Friedrich Marx is documented in Nuremberg from 1735 to 1787 (Hüseler I, p. 28; II, p. 409, table of marks 33,26). An identical subject appears on a platter in Museum Schloss Höchstädt, inv. no. HöS.K0755, formerly in the Igo Levi Collection. Five comparable plates attributed to the Kordenbusch period (three marked "K:.") are illustrated in Silvia Glaser, "Nürnberger Fayencen", pp. 402 ff.
The biblical scene depicts the return of the spies from the distant land of Canaan, carrying a large cluster of grapes on a pole (Numbers 13:23). A platter with a similar, reversed depiction is in the Neuner Collection (Ziffer 2012, vol. II, no. 40).
