BRUEGHEL, JAN d. J.

1601 Antwerpen 1678

Jan wurde 1601 als erstes Kind Jan Brueghels d. Ä. geboren und lernte bereits in frühen Jahren das Malerhandwerk bei seinem Vater. 1622 reiste er nach Italien und kehrte 1625 nach Antwerpen zurück, um das Atelier seines verstorbenen Vaters zu übernehmen. In seinem Frühwerk arbeitet Jan Brueghel d. J. noch verstärkt im Stil seines Vaters. 1651 erhielt er öffentliche Anerkennung durch Aufträge des österreichischen Hofes, die sein Schwager David Teniers d. J. (1610–1690) vermittelt hatte, der 1647 zum Hofmaler und Konservator Erzherzog Leopold Wilhelms ernannt worden war.
