Eduardo Chillida Juantegui wird am 10. Januar 1924 in San Sebastián im spanischen Baskenland geboren. Er beginnt 1943 ein Studium der Architektur am Colegio Mayor Jiménez de Cisneros, welches er vier Jahre später unterbricht, um an der privaten Kunstakademie Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid Kunst zu studieren. Dort spezialisiert er sich auf Zeichnung, Gips und Tonskulpturen. 1948 zieht er nach Paris, wo er sein Atelier einrichtet. Hier realisiert Chillida erste figürliche Plastiken aus Gips und Ton. Diese Werke stehen noch in der Tradition von Arp und Brancusi. Zu dieser Zeit macht er die Bekanntschaft mit dem spanischen Künstler Pablo Palazuelo, mit dem ihn eine langjährige Freundschaft verbindet. 1949 sowie im darauffolgenden Jahr beteiligt er sich am Salon de Mai, der Pariser Kunstmesse, die jährlich von 1944 bis 2014 stattfindet. Von Paris kehrt Chillida nach Spanien zurück, wo er sich in Hernani niederlässt. Er richtet in seinem neuen Atelier eine Schmiede ein, wo seine ersten monumentalen Eisenskulpturen entstehen.

Eduardo Chillida erlangt ab den 1950er Jahren internationale Bekanntheit; beispielsweise durch die Ehrung des internationalen Preises für Skulptur an der Biennale von Venedig, der vierfachen Teilnahme an der documenta in Kassel, mit der Auszeichnung des Kandinsky-Preises sowie dem Carnegie International Prize. 1980 widmet ihm das New Yorker Guggenheim Museum eine Retrospektive, es folgen weitere Einzelausstellungen in den USA und Europa. Im Jahr 2000 wird im Wohn- und Arbeitsort des Künstlers das Museum „Chillida-Leku“ (Chillidas Ort) eröffnet, welcher zum Kokon für seine Kunst geworden ist. Zwei Jahre später stirbt der Künstler in seiner Heimatstadt San Sebastián.
