1922 wird Kimber Smith in Boston geboren. In den späten 1940er Jahren studiert Smith Kunst an der "Art Students League" in New York. Wie viele amerikanische Künstler zieht Smith 1954 mit seiner Frau Gabrielle Staub nach Paris, wo er über ein Jahrzehnt lebt und arbeitet. Für Smith bedeutet Paris Distanz vom autochthonen, in New York vorherrschenden Abstrakten Expressionismus und Zugang zu europäischen Maltraditionen mit reichlich Spielraum für persönliche Entfaltungen.

Im Umfeld von Sam Francis, Kelly Ellsworth, Joan Mitchell, Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard und weiteren Künstlern entwickelt Smith eine ausgesprochen lyrische und ausdrucksstarke Malerei.

Stehen seine ersten Bilder mit ihrem eruptiven Ausdruck noch im Schatten des Abstrakten Expressionismus findet der Amerikaner mit einfachen symbolischen Formen wie Kreisen, Rauten, Balken, Dreiecken am Anfang der sechziger Jahre sein persönliches geometrisches Zeichensystem, dessen Ikonografie er aus Details alltäglicher Erfahrungen ableitet. Smiths malerischer Stil und seine progressive Herangehensweise an die Abstraktion reifen während seines Aufenthalts in Paris, einer Zeit, in der er regelmässig in Galerien in Frankreich, der Schweiz und Deutschland ausstellt.

1963 kehrt Smith mit seiner Frau und seinen beiden Söhnen in die USA zurück und übernimmt eine Professur am Dayton Art Institute in Ohio. 1971 wird Smith mit dem Guggenheim-Stipendium ausgezeichnet. Kimber Smith setzt seine Malerei kontinuierlich fort, allerdings ohne nennenswerte Unterstützung und Anerkennung durch die New Yorker Community. Obwohl der Künstler 1975 schwer erkrankt, malt er bis zu seinem Tod mit Strenge und Enthusiasmus.

Am 21. April 1981 stirbt Kimber Smith im Alter von 59 Jahren in East Hampton. Seine Werke sind in bekannten Museen und Privatsammlungen in Amerika, Europa, Frankreich, Belgien und der Schweiz vertreten.
