Lot 1410* - A198 Arms & Armour - Thursday, 30. September 2021, 05.00 PM

OPULENTLY DECORATED GLAIVE

In the style of the 1st half of the 16th century, Historicism, 19th century.
Long, double-edged blade with beak-like tip, and decorated spine. Etched decoration over the entire surface on a black dotted background. Between the back spines: the figure of a grim lion screwed into the blade, at the base of the blade, a dolphin figure, both of gilt brass. Solid conical octagonal socket. Round shaft with decorative tassel and spike, significantly restored.
Iron length 81.3 cm.

With the three crowns and the lion (as a shield holder), the weapon on offer makes reference to the coat-of-arms of the Swedish Kingdom; the dolphin represents Sweden's proximity to the sea. This very decorative, carefully-crafted Historicism weapon is likely to have been commissioned. It was sold as an original at the Auction Fischer, Lucerne 2000 under Lot No. 16 for CHF 14'000.-.
